"A "Special conservator of the peace" means any individual appointed by the circuit court pursuant to ยง 19.2-13 of the Code of Virginia on or after September 15, 2004, to perform only those powers, functions, duties and responsibilities authorized within such geographic limitations as the court may deem appropriate." An "Unarmed special
conservator of the peace" means a special conservator of the peace
registrant who does not carry or have immediate access to a firearm in
the performance of his duties.
An "Armed special
conservator of the peace" means a special conservator of the peace
registrant who carries or has immediate access to a firearm in the
performance of his duties.

Registration: To register in the state of Virginia as a Special Conservator of the Peace, you must meet the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice guidelines, satisfactorily complete the 06E and 07E courses if armed (08E-Shotgun Training is optional) with a grade of 70% or greater for 06E, and 75% or greater for 07E (and 08E if taking) and submit the appropriate DCJS fees and forms which will be explained during the administration portion of the course.
Special Conservator of the Peace In-Service training must be completed every 12 months, prior to expiration. As with the entry level course, all appropriate DCJS forms and fees must be submitted to successfully re-qualify as a Special Conservator of the Peace.
